BAYARD MAYBANK

Artist statement

When I throw clay on the potter’s wheel, I find myself caught between a sense of meditative peace and a rush - or the high - of creation. The two contradictory dynamics are reflected in the completed works, which are simultaneously simple and complex.

Primarily I work with a brown speckled clay which mutes color tones when glazed. I really appreciate the way the particular glazes I work with reflect our environment, be they blue, green, brown or grey. My specific process is to apply glaze quickly in order to evoke a dynamic sense of movement on the surface. And my intention is that my vessels and bowls provide a sense of elegance and reflection for the viewer.
