LOVE POEM WITH PARTIAL HEARING LOSS, by Lisa Bass
I might ask you to repeat yourself
tonight, if the crowd
is chatty or the background music
is cracked up or you clink
your fork against
your cocktail plate or
if you mumble. If we both love
the block letters
in this oil painting
and you point
without letting go
of my hand
at how they tilt
across the canvas
and our words
start to layer, tumble
over one another,
I might track
the movement
of your lips,
try to discern
what you want
me to know. I don’t want
The poem in its entirety is available at the gallery
